Users Stopping Anti-Obesity Injections Put On Pounds Far More Rapidly Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment involves long-term strategies.

A recent study indicates that people who stop using blockbuster weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on shed pounds much more quickly than those who stop traditional lifestyle programs.

Research printed in a prominent health publication points out that while obese individuals can lose a large proportion of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"Users using these treatments should be cognizant of the danger of fast weight regain when the treatment is stopped," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain means a return to pre-treatment mass within about a year and a half.

Comparing Approaches

The analysis, which examined 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the results of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.

Scientists note that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone generally experience a less rapid creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

The Reason for the Rapid Rebound

Experts suggest the way of the drugs accounts for the amplified weight return.

GLP-1 drugs mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate appetite.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations far above than the body's typical production could lead to the system to produce less of its own natural hormone, and could lessen sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Stopping of this medication leads to appetite is no longer kept in check, making binge eating a significant risk."

An Ongoing Issue?

The NHS advise the jabs for people with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians contend that, given the significant potential of relapse, the treatment is often life-long.

This opinion is echoed by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "highlight the long-term nature of obesity," akin to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

Patient Experiences

Users who have stopped the jabs report a sudden return of cravings.

"I experienced a switch activating and you're instantly extremely hungry," recalled one woman.

This challenge is exacerbated if patients have not established sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.

Significant Adoption

Survey data show that millions of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest being substantial.

  • Use is more common among females than men.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

In conclusion, clinicians emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent fix and maintained weight loss likely depends on combined lifestyle support.
