A minimum of 13 passengers lose their lives and 98 injured in train crash in Mexico.

A fatal railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the rapidity and management of the country's major infrastructure initiatives.

The accident happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a line developed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to offer an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.

“We are going to thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this incident,” stated the national leader.

The president announced that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The leader stated plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those involved.

Major Initiative of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a central public works project of the previous administration, whose time in office finished the prior year. This venture was a hallmark of his government's strategic goals for the southeastern region.

Another massive train initiative from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economic fortunes of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Worries

The construction of both train projects was managed by the armed forces, marking a notable increase of its role in civilian works. They were completed at an accelerated rate, beating expectations to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that administration.

However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently sparked persistent concerns over operational security.

  • Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This encompasses an earlier accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-lethal derailments.

Demands for Review and Suspension

In the wake of the disaster, the leader of a major opposition party urged an immediate suspension in the building and running of all such projects.

This halt was proposed pending a comprehensive technical review. The party declared that the situation "demands immediate answers."

In reaction, the national leader asserted that the train had been functioning in total accordance with all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the construction and running of these vital initiatives.
